At JBA we specialise in landscape architecture for the retirement living sector, working with clients like Churchill Retirement Living and Planning Issues. As lead Landscape Architects, we manage projects from the planning phase through to construction completion, ensuring landscapes are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Our approach includes evaluating site constraints and opportunities, designing detailed landscapes, and conducting construction stage inspections.
We emphasise sustainable designs that integrate well with the local environment, often incorporating existing trees and hedgerows to enhance, rather than replace, the site’s natural features. This strategy promotes biodiversity, reduces costs, and boosts property values by enhancing established aesthetics. Our designs focus on creating spaces that promote mental and physical well-being, using diverse planting to provide year-round color, texture, and interest, particularly in amenity areas and near residents’ apartments. We also prioritise ecological benefits by introducing evergreen native trees and hedges for privacy and bird nesting, enhancing biodiversity. Even in urban settings with constraints, our experienced team leverages these challenges to increase biodiversity and support Biodiversity Net Gain credit-scoring.
On this site in particular, the coastal setting with maritime micro-climate required a more specific planting palette, where tree and shrub choices have been specified for their tolerance of coastal conditions. Particular consideration has been given to the western boundary where additional tree planting is proposed within the garden areas for views into the site from neighbouring properties. During the construction process, JBA carried out site inspections to check the correct implementation of the approved detailed landscape proposals and specification. Feedback provided to the contractor for any corrective works and reinspected before sign off.
