Welcoming Neil Blackmore, Senior Landscape Architect

Welcoming Neil Blackmore, Senior Landscape Architect, an insight into some of his career highlights and the valuable experience he brings to the team…

Please can you tell us about your career journey so far:

What drew you to landscape architecture?

My journey into landscape architecture began with a love for drawing, which naturally led me to this field. While I don’t sketch as much as I used to, I still have a passion for the creative aspects of design. In my early years, I enjoyed the hands-on side of landscape construction and management, which further fuelled my interest.

What would you say are your key areas of expertise or elements you particularly enjoy most about your role?

My expertise lies in masterplanning, green infrastructure, and designing multi-functional spaces. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is collaborating with other disciplines to bring out the best in any site. I see landscape architecture as the glue / connecting force that holds all of the Natural and Built Environment disciplines together. Landscape architecture helps ensure that valuable features are retained and enhanced, while promoting good designs that are not only functional but will stand the test of time.

How did you decide to specialise in landscape architecture?

After working at various landscape practices on a variety of interesting projects, I moved into roles with larger organisations, including a quarrying company and a large plc housebuilder. A significant turning point in my career was being appointed as the Landscape Architect for a local district council, where I had the opportunity to help shape the development of a new town near Exeter. This experience sharpened my skills in layout design, negotiation, and delivering sustainable solutions while balancing multiple stakeholders and financial considerations.

What are some of the most significant projects you’ve been involved in? Any award-winning schemes or qualifications / key achievements you are most proud of?

I’ve had the privilege to contribute to several high-profile projects. Two major developments that stand out are Cranbrook and Sherford, both new towns in Devon. I also led the creation of the Green Infrastructure Strategy for the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point Area, which received commendation from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). It’s been exciting to see these projects coming to fruition, from planning stages to on-the-ground results. Plus, regeneration schemes for some of the towns in East Devon.

What unique skills or perspectives do you bring to James Blake Associates?

I believe in a management style that fosters learning through doing and encouragement. In my view, people learn best when given the space to explore and they have the right support in place. I also enjoy identifying opportunities early in the design process to enhance sustainability, such as reusing materials on-site to minimise waste or increasing biodiversity net gain (BNG) by making simple but effective alterations in the design. For example, combining acoustic mitigation with BNG (Devon hedgebanks) to re-use material rather than fencing.

4. Could you share an example of a challenging project that you’ve worked on, and how you navigated it successfully?
– How did this experience shape your approach to future projects?

Cranbrook and Sherford were particularly challenging projects, each with its own set of difficulties. Cranbrook, for example, was impacted by the 2008 financial crisis, which led to compromises in the quality of the architectural design. However, the green spaces and other environmental elements remained central to the project. At Sherford, I worked to balance ambitious initial plans with practical, financially viable solutions. Both experiences reinforced my belief in the importance of resilient, green infrastructure for the long-term success of a community.

5. With our ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation, how do you integrate these values into your work?

Every key decision is an opportunity to ask, “Can we simplify this? Can we make it more cost-effective or environmentally- friendly?” Sustainability should be a consideration at every stage of a project.

6. What excites you most about joining the team at James Blake Associates?

Utilising my skills in landscape architecture in a hands-on capacity is what excites me most. My passion for creating meaningful spaces has underpinned my career and I’m looking forward to working alongside the team and contributing to the growth of the company.

7. Are there specific projects or initiatives at James Blake Associates that you are looking forward to contributing to?

I have been focusing on the technical aspects of the role and I’m excited to contribute to larger, long-term projects on a strategic level and further strengthen our client base in the South West region.

8. What are your goals for your first year with James Blake Associates?

My primary goal is to establish myself as a reliable and valued senior member of the team and a key part of the business.

10. How do you help combat biodiversity loss / climate change?

We have some great opportunities to make a difference through our work, and I strive to practice what I preach at home. Every project presents a chance to enhance biodiversity and mitigate climate impact.

11. Outside of your professional work, what hobbies or interests do you pursue?

I enjoy walking and spending time in the sea whenever I can. I also attempt to surf, skate, play guitar, and do gardening in my spare time.

12. Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Morocco was a great experience, but I also love Cornwall and North Devon, which I’m lucky to live near. The area is becoming busier and more expensive, but that’s why I’ve got a van to escape into nature! I have a long list of places I want to visit but will save these for another time!

13. Is there anything else you’d like the team and our clients to know about you?

I’m fully committed to the vision, charter, and brand values of James Blake Associates. I look forward to working on exciting projects and contributing to the firm’s continued success.
